HMRC launches improved Self Assessment registration service

HMRC has launched an improved online registration service for Self Assessment. New registrants must register by 5 October 2026 for the 2025-26 tax year or face penalties. The service now provides UTRs within 72 hours instead of 15 days.
HMRC has launched an improved registration service making it easier to register for Self Assessment. The new system includes pre-populated forms, online support signposting, and save-and-return functions.
**Key deadlines:**
- New Self Assessment filers for 2025-26 must register by **5 October 2026**
- Tax return submission and payment deadline is **31 January 2027**
**Registration improvements:**
- Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) issued within 72 hours online instead of waiting up to 15 days by post
- Streamlined process through Personal Tax Account
- More than 640,000 customers registered in the 12 months to 31 March 2026
**Who needs to register:**
- Newly self-employed earning over £1,000 gross income
- Those earning below £1,000 who wish to pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance Contributions
- New business partners
- Those with untaxed income over £2,500
HMRC offers a free online checking tool to help determine if Self Assessment is required. Those no longer needing to complete returns should notify HMRC immediately to avoid penalties.
